Routine Visits
We recommend you visit our office every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. Here’s what you should expect in our Silver Spring, MD dentist’s office at regular visits:
Dental X-rays
We use digital X-rays to get a better view and spot any problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Unlike old-school X-rays that use film, these digital ones create clear images. We can view and save them instantly on a computer screen right after we take them.
Digital X-rays are also safer than traditional options because they use less radiation. With X-rays, we can find dental problems and easily plan treatment. Digital X-rays are a big upgrade from the past. They make dental check-ups faster, safer, and more accurate.
Teeth Cleaning
First, the dentist or dental hygienist will examine your mouth to check for any issues. Next, they’ll use special tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, especially in hard-to-reach places. After that, they will brush your teeth with a high-powered electric toothbrush and gritty toothpaste to get them clean.
Then, they will floss between each tooth to remove any leftover particles between them. Finally, you might get a fluoride treatment to help protect your teeth from cavities.
If you have signs of gum disease, we will recommend scaling and root planing at regular visits. This treatment combination removes harmful bacteria from beneath the gums and tooth roots.
Cleanings should not be painful. However, if you have signs of gum disease or tooth decay, you can feel discomfort from the dental tools. Plaque and tartar that build on your teeth and gums can also cause irritation when we remove them at routine cleanings.
Screenings
We offer quick and painless screenings for common problems like cavities and tooth decay. During gum screenings, we look for red, irritated, and bleeding gums. We will also measure gum pockets to determine your stage of gum disease. To look for signs of tooth decay, we will look for holes in the tooth enamel, discolored teeth, or tooth sensitivity.
Oral cancer screenings are also an essential part of routine care. Signs we look for include white and red patches in the mouth, chronic mouth sores, or swelling in the throat.
Consultation
During a consultation with one of our dentists, we welcome you to discuss problems you’re having with your teeth or mouth. Our dentists might also ask about your brushing and flossing habits to ensure you take good care of your teeth at home.
If we find any issues during your visit, our dentists will discuss them with you and create a custom treatment plan.
