Porcelain Veneers: Our Process

If you are looking for a long-term dental solution that will give you the whiter, straighter smile of your dreams, your dentist will likely recommend porcelain veneers. These cap-like shells adhere to your teeth and make them appear brighter and more even.

Though you may look forward to an enhanced appearance in your smile, you may also feel nervous about upcoming dental work. To alleviate any lingering dental fear, Dr. Alan Dechter and Dr. Matthew Moy, a dental team located in Silver Spring, MD, outline what will occur when you pursue smile enhancement treatment with porcelain veneers.

What Should I Expect During Porcelain Veneers Treatment?

Determining Optimal Cosmetic Treatment

If you are interested in cosmetic dental treatment, you must first schedule a consultation with your dentist. They will consider your smile aesthetic goals and evaluate the existing structure of your smile as well as your medical history to determine the best cosmetic solution for your unique dental needs. For long-lasting teeth whitening and straightening effects, dentists may recommend porcelain veneers.

Preparing Your Tooth Enamel

If you and your dental professional agree to pursue smile enhancement treatment with porcelain veneers, you will then schedule an appointment to prepare the affected teeth for this procedure. You will receive a local anesthetic to ensure you do not experience any discomfort in the dentist’s chair.

The dentist will then remove a minute amount of enamel from the front of your teeth by etching into the teeth’s surface. This allows for the veneers to better adhere to the teeth.

Creating Dental Impressions

Directly after your dentist prepares the surface of your teeth for this cosmetic treatment, they will take impressions of your teeth. They will use either a physical mold or digital imaging technology to get an accurate depiction of your smile which will be used to create personalized veneers.

The impressions will be sent to a laboratory where the dentist will build porcelain veneers that will look beautiful as well as natural in your smile. This process will take a few weeks, and the dentist can provide temporary veneers in the meantime.

Attaching Permanent Veneers

When your porcelain veneers are ready, you will return to your dentist’s office and have them secured into place. The dentist will use bonding to attach the veneers to the front of your teeth.

They will check that you can still bite down properly and that the fit is comfortable and looking well before you leave their office. With appropriate care and maintenance, you can enjoy smile enhancement from these fixtures for fifteen or more years.
